Today we took our little traveling show over to North Melbourne for the Thread Den North Melbourne Market. The market itself was quiet today as I think there were several events on in the city drawing shoppers elsewhere as well as a couple of other big markets being on around town. But we had fun regardless and made a couple of new market buddies in GreenDrop Ecocraft and Gavin & Archie, as well as catching up with our good friends over at Bedros Designs and enjoying the delicious cupcakes from Buttercup Bakeshoppe.

As I mentioned in my last post I spent the weekend at a screen printing workshop in Brunswick at Harvest Workroom. Day one was spent designing three simple artworks each of which was then traced out onto stencil paper and hand cut. These three stencils were then used with a print screen and frame in various combinations so we could experiment with inks and layering of colour.
Day two was focused on creating a printable pattern using the Swiss Repeat technique (a version of which is outlined here), again this design was hand drawn and hand cut onto stencil paper. This method creates a pattern tile which can be repeated or tiled on all sides to create a yardage print. In the past I have created many pattern repeats in my working life using Adobe Illustrator but had never hand drawn a repeat, so this method was really interesting. And the process of printing a pattern repeat was also quite challenging and put the tiny part of my brain dedicated to mathematics to the test. All in all it was a very productive and fun weekend.

These two little Wintery numbers debuted at North Melbourne Market last weekend. The first is a wool flannel coat with contrast binding and apple shaped buttons. I only had enough fabric to make one coat, so this colourway will be a one off. The second pic is a woolen cape with contrast lined hood. Its so warm and cosy that I want to make a big one for myself. Both are pictured with our denim pleat skirt. These two coats will be traveling to Newport with me this Saturday for The Substation Artists Market. Maybe I'll see you there.

Not much sewing has been happening around this neck of the woods. I think might have 'stitchers block'. Ohh dear. Plus my machines have just gone in for servicing. Hmm things are looking a little grim. So to divert myself from the angst involved with said 'stitchers block' I have been baking again today. I made some delicious Mini Choc Croissants from a recipe I came across on Melbourne Epicure (my fave go-to baking blog), and I also baked a big batch of Double Choc Almond Cookies which were a variation on a recipe found in this book... mmmm yummo.

This weekend has been somewhat productive in the Off the Peg household. I haven't done any sewing but hubby and I have tackled (some of) the unruly garden, and I have been baking up a storm today.
Yesterday we braved the cold and wet to finish clearing out our front garden and lay down a heap of organic mulch to hopefully keep the weeds at bay. Its the first time in about 4 years that our front garden is looking a bit tidy and cared for (terrible I know!). Now to tackle the backyard!
And today I felt like a spot of baking, so I made some yummy coconut macaroons and a batch of pistachio biscotti. It's the first time I have made either of these recipes so they need a little bit more perfecting but the results are quite delicious.

Mothers Day

Today we celebrated Mothers Day with both sides of the family. We took a little trip up the mountain to Seasons at Cloudhill. The weather was a cool and damp, but seeing the mist come in over the trees filled with Autumn leaves was really spectacular. The photo above is of the Mothers Day dessert special which was a fresh Strawberry mousse inside a heart shaped chocolate shell. It looked so pretty I had to share a pic with you. I hope your Mothers Day was a special one.

Yesterday we took our little show on the road again and headed over to the North Melbourne Market. I had a couple of new bits on show as you can see above. And hubby helped me with the setting up and packing down, plus he worked as my beautiful assistant for a few hours.
There is always so much fantastic stuff available at the North Melbourne Market I had to be very restrained to avoid spending my profits ;)

Last weekend

I realised that I hadn't given you a debrief on our trip to Daylesford last weekend. Hubby and I drove up on Friday night so that market day wouldn't be such a mammoth event, and also to give ourselves a little break from the big smoke for a couple of days. Saturday was a beautiful sunny day and there were lots of people strolling through the town hall for a look. Our stall was set up slightly differently again, I like to mix it up a little bit to see what works. We made a leisurely journey home on Sunday afternoon driving through lots of little towns off the highway. All in all we had a very nice weekend.

Mojo, no mojo

I just can't seem to find my mojo lately. I don't know what is going on. I feel like I'm all over the shop and not accomplishing much at all. This weekend has so far been consumed by cleaning, running around on errands and wrangling a wayward trolley through hoards of dawdling shoppers at the ol' stupermarket. Blah! I need to find this mojo quick smart in order to prepare for upcoming markets. The pics above show some of the new bits I made in preparation for my last market. I have more bits in the pipeworks plus alot of restocking to do so I just need to sit down and focus. As this wise lady said recently I need to lock myself away and just do it. And I need to seriously stop with the procrastination and just launch into projects head on, much like this inspiring lady whose prolific work is constantly inspiring.

I cannot explain why but I always feel compelled to bake on hot days... its a strange compulsion as I inevitably make the house hotter by having the oven running. Anyway, yesterday was a beautiful day here in Melbourne with a top temperature close to 30 degrees Celsius and I baked a loaf of Banana bread. It is quite yummy. This is the recipe, which I found via Bubhub;

Banana Bread
3 peeled ripe bananas
3/4 cup honey or golden syrup
1/4 cup melted butter
1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda
1 1/2 cup plain flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat oven to 180 degrees. In a large bowl, mash up the bananas with the back of a fork. Add the melted butter. Add bicarb soda, flour, and honey. Stir until everything is mixed together. Pour the mix into an oiled loaf tin. Bake for 1 hour.

Yarraville Market

Today we ventured over to the west to The Yarraville Market. Its such a sweet little market devoted entirely to local handmade products. You should visit it some time. And Yarraville is a little pocket of cuteness with tiny streets and heaps of fab stores and cafes.
I was trialling a new market setup today. I had a smaller table with alternating levels to draw the eye in and also to showcase the clothing rack which holds the bulk of my range. I would love to hear your feedback on the new look.

Yesterday our fur babies went to the doggie parlour for a wash and haircut. At this particular parlour they always send the puppies home with a spiffy coloured bandana. Look at the colours they came home with yesterday!! Henry has a lovely aqua bandana and Flossy is a cutie in red. So my puppies are officially ambassadors for the Off the Peg Summer 2011 range. :)

We just got home from seeing Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall) at The Forum. You never know quite what to expect from the beautiful Chan, but she was great tonight. She played heaps of new stuff which is expected to feature on her next album. The work was excellent and it looks like the Cat Power's next album will be really amazing. Can't wait.

* Auction is for ONE dress as pictured.

* Bidding will start at $30.00 AUD

* You can place a bid by leaving a comment on this blog post with your bid amount and email address. Please make sure that your bid is higher than the previous bidder.

* Your bid must be in whole dollar increments.

* This auction is open to everyone.

* Postage (both local and international) will be covered by Off the Peg

* The auction begins NOW and will END at 9PM Australian Eastern Daylight Savings time on Monday 24th January 2011.

* At the close of the auction, I will contact the successful bidder by email (please make sure your bid comment includes your email address). The successful bidder will pay the winning amount directly into the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal and send me proof of payment via email. Proof should be in the form of an official receipt showing the bidders name, receipt #, date and the full amount of the successful bid.

* There will be only one successful bidder. Bids received after the stated end time will not be considered.

* Please keep in mind that this auction is happening out of goodwill - with the aim to raise funds for those who have been devastated by the floods in Queensland. I received this gorgeous necklace in the post today. I bought it from Daughter of James as part of the Bris-Style Handmade Ark appeal. Its so pretty and stylish, and the packaging was nice too.

Last night I had dinner with some friends at a little place called Eau De Vie on Chapel St in Prahran. Friendly service, chic decor, delicious food and wine. Go check it out if you are in the area. This is a pic of the amazing desserts - the photo doesn't do them justice at all but they were so very yummy!

This is awesome!!
