Elsa

Have you heard of the artist Elsa Mora? If not, go to her blog and have a look around. She is truly gifted and so prolific. Each of her pieces - be it a papercut, an illustration or a piece of jewellery - is so detailed, beautiful and unique. Elsa says her work "is about human nature, about the way we are and the way we interact with each other, with ourselves and with the rest of the world." Art seems to flow through her veins and its a way of communication - you only need to read this post to be able to see that.

A book you should read

I have just finished reading 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' by John Boyne. It's the story of Bruno, a young boy unwittingly caught up in the atrocities of the Jewish Holocaust. The book is narrated in a childlike tone which conveys Bruno's innocent perspective on the world surrounding him, and ultimately reinforces the horror and insanity of war. It is truly a must read.

Soapbox time

I don't normally get up on my soapbox, but this is an issue I have a passion for;
I am not a fan of bottled water. Not because of the taste, but because of the negative environmental footprint left by its production. Did you know it takes at least 3 litres of water to make 1 litre of bottled water? And Australia recycles only 36% of PET plastic drink bottles.* I try to drink tap water whenever possible and I have a Tupperware drink bottle which I use daily. But recently I came across 321, which is a super stylish and fully recyclable drink bottle featuring a filter to get rid of any nasties. 321 was featured on The New Inventors recently and since then they have been steadily gaining interest from the public. Production is due to start on these bottles at the end of this month, but in order to raise the funds to get the whole process up and running the creators of 321 need to secure 10,000 pre-orders. I have ordered two. So, if you are interested please spread the word and get on board.
Positivity
I just came across Indigo Magazine through Myrtle & Eunice. It's nice to know that there are peeps out there trying to create positive media for the young'ns. It concerns me deeply that our society encourages kids to grow up way too quickly, and instills in them a warped sense of self based on unrealistic images portrayed by the mainstream media. Yay! for positive reinforcement.

To share

I just came across a lovely blog called Red Felt Flower through this other blog. Red Felt Flower then lead me to Kia Hing Fay and her gorgeous little applique kits as pictured above. Cute hey! You just never know where the trail of blogs will lead you.
